Welcome to the Indiana County Tourist Bureau Blog!

Indiana County, Pennsylvania is located in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains -just one hour east of Pittsburgh and has several unique attractions and entities that make it a very desirable travel destination.

Indiana County is home to: 64 miles of Rails to Trails and more than 15 miles of single track mountain biking, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a robust Agritourism industry, old order Amish families, and a wealth of history ranging from the French and Indian War to our own hometown hero, Jimmy Stewart.

Summer Fairs and Festivals

Though summer may not officially begin until June 21st,  it already feels like summer in Indiana County! This means it's the start of our busiest months for numerous fairs and festivals.  Below is a listing of fairs and festivals being held in Indiana County during June, July and August.  These months are filled with a wide variety of events for everyone.  Spread throughout the entire county, the fairs and festivals listed below are a great way to go out and enjoy some fun with your entire family.  For a complete listing of all events, please visit our website: www.visitindianacountypa.org.

Saltsburg Canal Days
Friday, June 3rd through Sunday, June 5th 
Happening in Downtown Saltsburg, this three day festival includes a quilt show, duck race, flag retirement ceremony, parade, crafts, food vendors, live entertainment and fireworks.  For more information about this event, please contact: 724-639-9413.

Amish Wedding Feast - Smicksburg
Saturday, June 4th
Happening at The Country Cupboard in Smicksburgvisitors will hear real life stories about the Amish and will enjoy a delicious meal served family style. Lovin' Downtown Every Second
Friday, June 10th
Beginning at 5 p.m. in Downtown Indiana, this free event is sponsored by Downtown Indiana and invites families, friends and neighbors to stroll downtown on the second Friday of the month. Artists, musicians and once a month sales will be lining the downtown area to give you a chance to enjoy the night life. Even if you just want to take a walk down the street, park your car for free starting at 5pm at the metered spaces. Each month will host a new list of sales, activities and opportunities you can’t afford to miss. The monthly brochure and map are available at www.downtownindiana.org or at many of the downtown businesses. The monthly event is being brought to you by Downtown Indiana, Inc and its members. Pick-A-Dilly Herb Faire
Saturday, June 11th
The Dillweed Bed & Breakfast in Dilltown is pleased to announce its’ 13th annual Pick-A-Dilly Herb Faire, scheduled for Saturday, June 11th, from 9am to 4pm. Admission is free and open to the public. Dillweed will provide food and refreshments for sale throughout the day including their famous pestopizza slices!  The festival is co-sponsored by The Indiana County Herb Study Group.   In addition to featured growers selling a large variety of flowering plants, herbs and perennials, the festival also welcomes artisans selling original artwork, jewelry, hand poured soap products, copper items and other garden inspired products.   Visitors may gain valuable gardening information, growing tips and learn how to care for and cultivate their own herbal gardens.  Learn the history and many uses of this year’s featured herb, Horseradish, as proclaimed by the International Herb Association.  A booklet of recipes compiled by the study group will be available for sale. Visit the "Ask the Gardening Expert" table with your herb and general gardening questions anytime throughout the duration of the Herb Faire!  FREE seminars and demonstrations to be presented are as follows:

The festival will be held in Downtown Indiana. Philadelphia Street will be closed for Displays and Vendors.  Live Entertainment will be held throughout the festival.  Free Trolley Shuttle between downtown Indiana and the Jimmy Stewart Airport.  Saturday there will be an Antique Auto Display and Sunday will be the Emergency Vehicle Display.  Come out and enjoy the food, music, crafts and fun! Christmas in July at Idlewild and SoakZone
Monday, July 25th through Friday, July 29th
 In addition to the fantastic rides, games and shows that the park has to offer, the week will include many activities relating to Indiana County’s reign as “The Christmas Tree Capital of the World.”  Activities for the week include: a Parade of Trees, holiday decorations and even a special warm-weather visit from Santa Claus himself. The theme is a “Story Book Forest Christmas in July” with all of the activities taking place near and throughout the Story Book Forest section of the park.  

 Friday, July 29th, is Indiana County Day! Gather up the family, pack a picnic and join in the fun. An Indiana County giveaway item will be given to the first 500 Parade of Trees visitors, awards for Parade of Trees contest winners will be presented and the winner of the Bicycle drawing will be announced. In addition, throughout the day, gift certificates, donated by businesses and organizations from Indiana County, will be given away. Indiana County Fair

Executive Director Appearing as Featured Guest on Radio

"Christmas in July" at Idlewild and SoakZone

announce “Christmas in July”   at Idlewild and Soak Zone in Ligonier, PA


 INDIANA - The Indiana County Tourist Bureau and Indiana County Christmas Tree Growers Association announce that July 25-29 will be “Christmas in July” at Idlewild and Soak Zone in Ligonier, PA. 

      In addition to the fantastic rides, games and shows that the park has to offer, the week will include many activities relating to Indiana County’s reign as “The Christmas Tree Capital of the World.”  Activities for the week include: a Parade of Trees, holiday decorations and even a special warm-weather visit from Santa Claus himself. The theme is a “Story Book Forest Christmas in July” with all of the activities taking place near and throughout the Story Book Forest section of the park.

      Keeping with tradition will be the annual Parade of Trees. Approximately 25 trees will be donated by the Indiana County Christmas Tree Growers Association for various Indiana County organizations, businesses, clubs and members of the Tree Growers Association to decorate. These themed trees will be voted on by visitors to the Parade of Trees Pavilion and upon casting their favorite tree vote they will be entered to win a bicycle courtesy of Idlewild Park. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top 3 favorite trees and presented to the group or organization that decorated the winning trees. In addition to the Parade of Trees, the Indiana County Tourist Bureau will have a county informational booth set up throughout the week.

     “This is a fantastic opportunity not only for Indiana County’s residents to enjoy Idlewild Park; but also a chance for others to see what a great place Indiana County is to work, live and visit,” says Tourist Bureau Executive Director Penny Perman.

        ”This is the eighth year for this event and Idlewild is very excited about hosting Christmas in July,” says Kathy Sichula, Director of Group Sales for Idlewild and Soak Zone. “The week will provide loads of fun for the whole family and Christmas displays will transform Story Book Forest into scenes of a winter wonderland.”

Discounted Ticket Sales

      In conjunction with the Christmas in July Week, the Indiana County Tourist Bureau is conducting their annual discount Idlewild and Soak Zone ticket sales. Tickets are on sale at a special price of $19.00, a savings of $13.99 off regular park admission of $31.99 + tax.  Tickets may be purchased at the Indiana County Tourist Bureau at the Indiana Mall, as well as: Tate’s Supermarket in Clymer, the All-American Barbershop in Saltsburg, Mercik’s Bi-Lo in Homer City, Indiana First Bank in Blairsville, or Valeski’s 4th Street Bi-Lo and Renda Broadcasting in Indiana.  These discount tickets can be used any operating Monday-Friday at the park during the 2011 season. Tickets can also be used on weekends for an additional $10.00 per ticket charge at the gate.  Any business or organization wishing to decorate a Christmas Tree for the Parade of Trees or purchase discount tickets should call the Tourist Bureau office. NATIONAL TOURISM WEEK May 9 -13

Indiana County Tourist Bureau joins hundreds of cities, states and travel-related businesses nationwide in recognition of National Tourism Week, held May 9-13. Designated by Congress and established by presidential proclamation in 1983, the event highlights the value and impact of the nation’s travel industry and the economic and social contributions it brings to not only the United States but Indiana County, Pennsylvania.

“Hotels and meeting facilities, attractions, restaurants and transportation providers are among the local businesses greatly impacted by travel to Indiana County,” said Penny Perman, Executive Director of the Indiana County Tourist Bureau. “This industry provides employment, generates revenue for our county and touches our community in countless other ways. In Indiana County, this week celebrates the people who visit here, the workforce that provides service for them and the development created as a result of visitors.”

The Tourism Promotion Agencies of the 67 counties of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania represent Pennsylvanians throughout the hospitality industry, from service professionals to executives, whose work and livelihood is dependent upon tourism.
